Hunt Tips

Meat Shipment:
- Watch what day you come out of the field on, some of the shippers are closed on certain day. (i.e: Northern Air Cargo doesn’t have flights on Sunday)
- If flying through Fairbanks most shipping areas will put it in the freezer for you
- A tarp will be needed to place over the meat
- You can ship to Anchorage just in game bags on pallet (pallet provided by transporter)

Gear Shipment:
- Alaska Air will allow 3 bags at 50lbs if you are leaving from Anchorage and flying within Alaska.
Tip: Get a flight to Anchorage, and then another to Kotzebue the next day.  Take all your gear to hotel and head to the Sportsman’s Warehouse.  Buy some gear that is either bulky and about the same price as home (i.e. Mt. House, Tarps, Game Bags, Rope, Hip Boots) and check an extra bag the next day.
- Your transporter may have extra tarps (call and find out) I know that we donated 3 that were dirty or wet.
- You can not transport fuel on a commercial carrier and it is expensive to ship with Northern Air so buy fuel in Kotzebue (they only carry white gas or green Coleman green bottles, NO isobutene)
- You don’t need SALT!  It is heavy the weather in September is cool enough you don’t need it but bring it if you have the space.

Camp Tips:
- Purify water in large amounts instead of boiling.  Spend the money on a good purifier and you will spend more time hunting instead of boiling water, especially with larger hunt groups.
- Set your camp up for rain right away (it will come)
- Prepare every night for wet rain, if it doesn’t come the dew will, cover all stuff
- Have a tarp (plastic sheeting) for under the tent, it will save you
- Set a close line up in your tent to hang the little things and air out some closes
- Hang food for bear protection; make sure to cover it so it doesn’t get wet in rain/dew

Hunt Tips:
- Caribou don’t seem to move when you shoot.  If you miss from far distances be prepared to fire again.  I heard of people shooting at 575yrds with a 300 Win/Mag
- When hit caribou will lie down, the one next to him will watch so if you have two nice bulls be prepared to take them both.
- If scented they will just change direction, they won’t bolt.
- If spotted creeping, they will bolt – just be calm and wait for an open shot

Gear Tips:
- Hip boots are a must, don’t think gaiters are all you need, you may be hunting riverbeds
- 4 Season tent, don’t come here thinking a $29 special from Walmart will work
- Ammo, its heavy so make sure you take enough but not to much (buy it in Anchorage)
